I Want My Hat Back

24/02/2015 by Gary Northfield

hatbackSimplicity is the key when it comes to great storytelling and I don’t think I’ve ever read anything simpler than ‘I Want My Hat Back’.

Jon Klassen’s book will have you laughing out loud at the blank expressions of the poor bear who wants to find his hat and the various suspects he interrogates.

It’s a perfectly told story that you will read in less than five minutes, yet be glad you spent £12 on.

A Bit Lost

24/02/2015 by Gary Northfield

bitlostA Bit Lost by Chris Haughton tells the story about a baby owl who falls out of its nest, then desperately tries to find his mum again. It’s a quick read, yet It will break your heart and make you laugh with every page.

The artwork is stunningly designed and the story so beautifully told, that you’ll want to read it again and again. It’s won awards and been translated all over the place.

In short, a masterpiece.

Oh No, George!

06/01/2015 by Alex Milway

ohnogeorgeOh No George! by Chris Haughton is a wonderfully simple and funny picture book. It’s humour lies fully in the character of George the dog, and the reader’s expectations of what he’s going to get up to next. Will he eat the cake? Will he?!

Wonderful to read aloud, and great in front of a class, not to mention the engagingly bright art, this one’s a winner!

The Book With No Pictures

05/01/2015 by Alex Milway

booknopicsA book that sells itself on the fact it has no pictures shouldn’t please me, but this does. The Book With No Pictures by B J Novak is a clever little title, that takes immense pleasure in the conversation between author and reader – and the child who’ll be sat listening in the middle. It’s not so much a story, more a mischievous discussion between a book and a reader.

As such, it’s funny, it contains mildly naughty words, and children will really enjoy it for making the adult jump through hoops of the author’s – or maybe the words’ – making.
